ACNE
Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that typically appears on your face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders. One of the most common skin conditions, it happens when pores become blocked by oil, bacteria, dead skin cells, and dirt. An estimated 80% of people ages 11 to 30 will have at least a mild form of acne.
What Causes It
Acne occurs when hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin
cells, and can cause whiteheads, blackheads and pimples.
The mildest type of acne is whitehead, which forms when oil and dead skin cells get trapped in hair follicles under the skin and forms a white tip. If the congestion occurs in an open hair follicle, the trapped sebum can oxidise and turn brown as it is exposed to air, resulting in the formation of a blackhead. When bacteria sneaks its way into these congested hair follicles, inflammation occurs, leading to the formation of pimples. And if the inflammation occurs deep inside the hair follicles, larger and painful bumps might form beneath the surface of the skin.

PORES
To understand enlarged pores, you’ll first need to understand that pores are openings on the skin where sweat and sebum are released. And while enlarged pores are often perceived as clogged pores, they’re not the same. While congestion can lead to pores appearing enlarged, there are other causes that can lead to enlarged pores.
What Causes It
- Clogged Pores: When pores become clogged with excess oil and debris, they become more noticeable. Those with oily skin are more prone to congestion and visibly larger pores. Therefore, keeping pores clean and clear will help them appear less visible.
- Genetics: Some people are simply predisposed to have larger pore size than others. Topical skincare products are unable to reduce pore size. Instead, they can help reduce congestion so pores look less noticeable.
- Age: As we age, it’s inevitable that our skin loses its elasticity. This means that as our skin starts to sag, the shape of our pores can change from being circular to oval, making them appear larger. sagging skin our skin loses its elasticity over time, pores can become more visible.

FINE LINE & WRINKLES
Wrinkles are lines or creases found on your skin, most often found on your face, neck and arms,
but can appear anywhere on your body.
A natural part of your body’s ageing process, they are inevitable and happen when skin
becomes thinner, drier, slower to renew and regenerate. However, the severity of lines and
wrinkles, as well as when they start to occur, are dependent on various lifestyle factors.
What Causes It
There are several factors that cause your skin to wrinkle.
- Ageing: Collagen is a protein within your body that gives your skin
structure. When your body’s cells age, their ability to produce collagen
slows down, skin cells also divide more slowly, and the dermis begins to
thin.
The dermis has a network of elastin and collagen fibres, which offer
support and elasticity. As this network loosens and unravels with time,
depressions form on your skin’s surface. Ageing skin is also less able
to retain moisture, less efficient in secreting oil and slower to heal,
contributing to the development of wrinkles.
- Facial muscle contractions: Small muscle contractions cause lines on
your forehead, between your eyebrows (frown lines), and at the corners of
your eyes (crow’s feet) to form. A person’s habitual facial expressions, such
as smiling, frowning, squinting, and others, can make wrinkles in these
areas more prominent.
- Sun damage: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is cumulative and
can prematurely age your skin—. Exposure to UV light breaks down your
skin’s collagen and elastin fibres. Without supportive fibres, your skin
loses strength and flexibility and begins to sag and wrinkle.
- Smoking: Harmful chemicals in tobacco accelerate the normal ageing
process of your skin and damage the skin in a variety of ways. Researchers
have found that nicotine in cigarettes causes narrowing of the blood
vessels in the outermost layers of skin, this leads to a slower regeneration
of new collagen and skin cells which results in wrinkles development.

SENSITIVE SKIN
Having sensitive skin means your skin is more prone to flare-ups and reactions such as redness,
flakiness and itching. It is usually the cause of a weaker skin barrier.
The skin barrier protects the body from free radicals, pollution particles and UV rays. In addition,
it also helps the body to hold onto natural moisture by preventing transepidermal water loss.
What Causes It
- Irritant contact dermatitis: The most common form of sensitive skin,
it results in a non-specific rash forming after exposure to an irritating
chemical or any physical agent that damages the skin’s protective outer
layer.
- Allergic contact dermatitis: An allergic or immune reaction to an
irritating chemical, allergen or other substance.
- Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis: A chronic condition, which can
flare up periodically, in which skin becomes rough and inflamed.
- Hormonal fluctuations: Hormones are essential chemicals released in
the body to regulate various cellular responses. However, when hormonal
levels fluctuate (due to medication or menstrual cycle etc), skin can
become more sensitive.
- Other lifestyle factors like climate and diet also play a part in skin
sensitivity. Some might notice that your skin becomes drier, itchier and
more prone to redness when you travel to winter climates. On the other
hand, those who consume a diet with healthy fats like avocado and
fatty fish might find that they are less likely to develop skin sensitivity as
these foods are rich in omega fatty acids, an essential building block in a
healthy skin barrier.
